East Vancouver's upcoming real estate market has some of the best values in the market. The East Side is home to a number of diverse neighbourhoods and engaging communities.
Geographic Information
Making up the eastern section of Vancouver, East Vancouver begins on Ontario Street (near Main), to Boundary Street on its eastern border with Burnaby, and between Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River.
Zoning and Architecture
Houses on Vancouver's East Side are more affordable than Vancouver's West Side. There is a mix of classic character homes offset by retro-chic Vancouver specials throughout the Main Street, Commercial Drive, and Strathcona communities. Many of the single family homes have been converted into split-levels with self-contained basement, main and top-floor suites, often used as rental suites and offices. New homes, condos and townhouses are increasingly replacing older "knock-downs."
Shops, Services and Leisure
East Vancouver neighbourhoods have a distinctive culture of diversity and community spirit. Eclectic shops, dining, galleries, farmer's markets, and entertainment venues provide meeting places and showcase the area's unique local character.
The Main Street neighbourhood between Kingsway and 25th Avenue, known locally as SoMa, is home to cutting-edge galleries, chic boutiques, antique row, exciting nightspots that showcase local and international talent, as well as excellent cafes and bistros. Further down Main Street at 49th Avenue, there is a large Indian community and the exciting aromas and colours of the Punjabi Market.
Hastings-Sunrise is a middle-class family neighbourhood that is gaining recognition as a Vancouver Real Estate destination. Authentic delicatessens and an authentic barber shop are living histories of its early Italian emigration. Excellent food shopping, ethnic food restaurants, friendly coffee shops, a French-Immersion school, and easy-to-access public transportation to Downtown, North Vancouver and Burnaby, make Hastings Sunrise one of the most unique and convenient neighbourhoods in the East Side.
Parks and Recreation
Parks throughout East Vancouver provide green enclaves where residents play, dog walk, bird watch and attend summer concerts. One park that will appeal to everyone is the re-greened Hastings Park near the Pacific National Exhibition. It has a bird and fish sanctuary, an Italian garden, a Japanese garden and a skateboard park. Trout Lake Park is home to vast meadows, a swimming beach, a dog park and a beautiful copse of willow trees. It is the site of many community events, including the annual Illuminares Festival of Light. It is close to the Trout Lake Community Centre and the Croation Cultural Centre, a local medium-sized music venue.
